The beach in Santa Maria on the island of Sal is wonderful. The clean, white soft sand and the translucent turquoise waters make it very popular. The Camara (local council) is now exploring the possibility of getting the beach awarded a blue flag.
To qualify for this designation, the beach has to satisfy a number of of requirements, including quality, safety, and absence of animals. If successful, this will be the first beach in Cape Verde to have a blue flag. The blue flag scheme is operated by the Foundation for Environmental Education.
Discussions are currently underway to develop ideas for the beach to receive this designation. It will be a surprise to many that the beach does not already meet the necessary criteria. It is one the best beaches to be found within easy reach of Europe.
