Unusually heavy rain in Santa Maria on Sal island on 10 October resulted in some of the roads being flooded. The rain started around midnight on 09 October and appears to have continued for over 10 hours. The fire brigade had to be mobilised to pump the water away so that traffic could get through. A few days later there was more very heavy rain. Sal is normally one of the driest islands in the archipelago, so this was a particularly surprising occurrence.
Rain is a precious commodity in Cape Verde. The country gets very little rain, which makes things difficult for farmers. However, not all of the islands were lucky enough to get rain this time.
